Your holiday destination at Lake Millstätter See in Carinthia looks back on a history that spans more than 145 years. We put a lot of passion and care into ensuring that this tradition lives on. Our love of detail is noticeable everywhere, with carefully arranged period furniture and antiques underlining the history of our hotel.

Hosts for 4 generations

Your host is Stefanie Aniwanter, who took over the reins from her father Mathias in 2016. Mathias learned everything about running a hotel from scratch and is happy to lend a hand at the Forelle to this day. Ever since 1981, his wife Christa has stood by his side as the “fairy godmother” of the hotel. Stefanie followed in her father’s footsteps and returned to the Forelle after completing her tourism training and working in some of the world’s top hotels. The Aniwanters have a strong sense of family, and this is also reflected in the hotel staff, many of whom have been with the Forelle for years and years.

1870 Franz Bacher (fisherman) builds the Haus Forellenheim

1910 Franz Bacher junior takes over

1950 Gertrude Aniwanter (née Bacher) takes over

1954 2nd and 3rd floor are added

1955 Haus Gabriele is purchased

1957 Haus Seehansel is extended

1958 “Runder Speisesaal” dining hall is built

1959 Rooms are added to Haus Gabriele

1968 Haus Gabriele is refurbished

1969 The Forelle is demolished and rebuilt with a new terrace

1972 – 1983 Joint management by Gertrude Aniwanter and her son Mathias

1973 Á-la-carte dining hall is built

1973 Haus Jaritz is purchased as a staff building

1983 Mathias Aniwanter takes over

1984 The first wellness area with whirlpool and sauna is constructed

1986 Haus Gabriele is joined to the Forelle

1988 “Langerteil” is refurbished and balconies are added

1993 Haus Bachforelle is purchased as a branch

1994 Haus Jaritz (staff building) is refurbished and enlarged

2003 Wellness area is extended and refurbished

2007 Hotel Forelle Betriebs GmbH & Co KG is founded

2008 The outdoor pool is replaced by the indoor pool; the bar and salon/seminar room are refurbished

2012 Heating system is replaced by a 150 m² solar plant and 100 m² photovoltaics plant

2013 Haus Bachforelle is converted into 4 holiday apartments

2016/2017 Restaurant, kitchen, lakeside terrace, seminar and event rooms are refurbished

2020/21 Rooms/suites are redesigned/refurbished

2020 145-year anniversary of the Die Forelle Hotel on Lake Millstätter See

2021 Early May: reopening after refurbishment

2023 Conversion of the King Trout Suite and Salmon Trout Suite

2024-2030 We are looking forward to many new milestones and will keep you posted on all of them!
